Frequently asked questions
The essentials about borrowing, the indemnity and settling up.
What is Autopartage?
Autopartage is a shared logbook for neighbours who lend each other their own cars. Every car belongs to a member of the community: there is no shared fleet and no intermediary.
Members book a car, log their kilometres when they return, and a per-kilometre indemnity moves each household’s balance. Balances are settled later, when the community decides to.
How is the indemnity calculated?
The indemnity equals the distance driven multiplied by the car’s per-kilometre rate, minus the fuel you paid for during the trip. The rate includes fuel.
For example, 18 km at €0.40/km gives an indemnity of €7.20 for the owner.
If you fill the tank during a short trip, the indemnity can become negative: the owner then owes you the difference.
Who sets the per-kilometre rate?
Each community defines its own rates. The owner chooses the one that applies to their car, and an administrator can change it.
The rate is copied onto each trip when it is logged. Changing it afterwards does not alter past trips.
How are balances settled?
When the community decides to. The app then suggests the payments to make to bring every balance back to zero in few transfers.
You make these payments between yourselves, by whatever means you choose, then record them in the app. Autopartage does not collect money and does not transfer any.
A community can also turn on a common fund: payments then go through it.
Who sees my address and my key-safe code?
Your household, and the borrower whose booking you have accepted. They see the address, where the keys are, the key-safe code and your phone number from acceptance until the end of the borrowing.
Other members of the community have no access to them, administrators included.
Do I need to own a car to join a community?
No. A household can borrow its neighbours’ cars without owning one.
How do my neighbours join the community?
With an invitation link. The person who creates the community becomes its administrator and invites the other households. Each member can then invite someone into their own household.
People in the same household each have their own account and share a single balance.
What happens if I make a mistake when logging a trip?
You can correct it. So can the car’s owner and the administrators. Every correction is kept, and balances are updated.
Does Autopartage take care of insurance?
No. Car insurance and the rules to follow in case of damage, a fine or a breakdown remain a matter for your community and its members. Autopartage keeps the logbook of borrowings and indemnities.
Which languages is the app available in?
French and English.
